The President of India Smt Droupadi Murmu conferred Padma Vibhushan to Shri Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu, the 13th Vice-President of India in the field of Public Affairs from Andhra Pradesh during Civil Investiture Ceremony.

Shri Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu, the 13th Vice President of India, has been a prominent political leader for over five decades.
Born on 1st July 1949 in Chavatapalem village in the Nellore District of Andhra Pradesh, Shri Naidu was initiated early into mainstream politics as a student activist and played an important role in the Jai Andhra Movement in 1972. A law graduate from Andhra University, he has had a long, illustrious career as a legislator spanning over thirty-four years, ten years as an MLA from Udayagiri in Nellore district and nearly twenty-four years as a member of Rajya Sabha from Karnataka and Rajasthan. He served as Union Minister of Rural Development in 1999 in the Council of Ministers headed by Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Later, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, he served, between 2014 and 2017, as Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Union Minister of Urban Development, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation and Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting. He was the Vice-President of India from 2017 to 2022.
Shri Naidu has consistently championed the cause of farmers and development of backward areas during his political journey. He played key roles in enhancing rural road connectivity through programmes like Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna and improving the quality of life of urban population by effectively implementing national initiatives like Smart Cities Mission, AMRIT, HRIDAY and Housing for All (Urban). Presiding over the Rajya Sabha, he reached out to leaders of all political parties and endeavoured to raise the salience, stature and productivity of Parliament. He has underscored the critical importance of effective functioning of Parliamentary Committees and other democratic institutions. As a public figure, he has held a number of leadership positions in the Bhartiya Janata Party, including as its President. In his numerous public engagements, he has passionately argued for greater citizen ownership and partnership in national development as well as for enhanced use of Indian languages in education, governance and social life. His commitment to contribute to the realization of the dream of a Shresth Bharat and Atmanirbhar Bharat led him to establish ‘Swarna Bharat Trust’, a not-for-profit voluntary organization with a focused attention to women’s empowerment, skill development of youth as well as healthcare needs and livelihood opportunities of the rural poor.
Shri Naidu has etched for himself a unique place in Indian politics with his eloquent speeches, disarming simplicity and humane, pragmatic approach towards governance. He has distinguished himself in various public offices he has held and has endeared himself to the vast Indian diaspora during his visits abroad. He chaired the General Council Meeting of UN-Habitat held in Nairobi in 2017.
Shri Naidu was conferred an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Peace, founded by the United Nations, for his contribution “to the Rule of Law, democracy and sustainable development in India” in 2019. He was also conferred ‘The Order of the Green Crescent’, the highest civilian honour, by the Government of Comoros in 2019. He is also the recipient of several lifetime achievement awards for outstanding public service.
